SHES A LADY BY PAUL ANKA:
Well she's all you'd ever want,
She's the kind they'd like to flaunt and take to dinner.
Well she always knows her place.
She's got style, she's got grace, She's a winner.
She's a Lady. Whoa whoa whoa, She's a Lady.
Talkin' about that little lady, and the lady is mine.
Well she's never in the way
Always something nice to say, Oh what a blessing.
This song talks a lot about the perfect woman- always being polite and knowing what and when to say things. It says: ‘She always knows her place’ and ‘She never gets in the way’, which is a lot like what many Indian women are expected to be like due to their traditions.
The ironic thing about this song is that it is being played when the girls’ soccer team is training, which seems like the opposite thing this song is talking about. This song can also be perceived a different way when playing while the girls are training. It could be like saying even though all these girls are playing what is traditionally thought of as a man's game, they are still women. Playing sport doesn't define you as a tom boy or a lesbian.

DO YOUR THING BY BASEMENT JAXX:
I don't give a damn what the people say
I'm gonna do it, gonna do it my way
Gonna let it all out and do my thing
Free the mayhem in your mind, release the need inside of you
You're gonna suffer
Do your thing
This song reminds me a lot about Jess and Jules. They both are chasing their soccer dream, and they aren't going to let other people and their opinions get in the way of achieving their goals.

MOVE ON UP BY CURTIS MAYFEILD:
Hush now child and don't you cry
Your folks might understand you by and by
So in the mean time, move on up towards your destination
Though you may find from time to time complications
Bite your lip and take a trip
Though there may be wet road ahead
And you cannot slip so what you wanna do
Just move on up for peace you will find
Into the steeple of beautiful people where there's only one kind
Take nothing less than the supreme best
Do not obey for most people say 'cause you can past the test
So what we have to do is move on up and keep on wishing
Remember your dream is your only scheme so keep on pushing
This song is basically saying: getting to where you want to be might be hard and you might encounter troubles, but never give up because some day you will get there. This is basically what Jess has to struggle through throughout the whole film.

INDEPENDENCE DAY BY MELANIE C:
I have my dream to live, following that star
It doesn't matter how long it takes, it doesn't matter how far
No time for make believing, and it's too late to turn back now
Yeah yeah yeah!
I've been dreaming about it
I can't live without it
I've got to find my own way
I'm not changing my mind now
Or looking behind now
This is my Independence Day
My Independence Day
I know it'll take some time, but I won't give up the fight
Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, but that's alright, oh yeah
I've got to spread my wings and learn how to fly
'Cause this feeling drives me on, it's something I cannot deny
Independence Day's lyrics talk about how you should never give up on your dreams, and even though there may be a few bumps in the road you should never give up. Many songs in the film have messages similar to this, as following your dreams is a giant part of the film. This song also represents how throughout the movie Jess gains her own independence and can finally stand up for herself, she won't let anybody hold her down.
